Texas State Board of Education

Bob Craig is a conservative Republican incumbent on the Texas State Board of Education. He just defeated a hard-right challenger in the GOP primary. In this podcast, Craig discusses the SBOE with Mark Haslett of Amarillo’s High Plains Public Radio. The Board will meet on March 10 to continue its revision of Social Studies teaching guidelines.

The Texas State Board of Education is proposing a change in the social studies curriculum that will be used as an instruction guide for the next ten years.  Some of the controversial recommendations include, downsizing roles of first black Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall and Mexican American civil rights activist Cesar Chavez.  The new draft guideline would make teaching these figures optional.  Other board members are concerned about the draft including changes that do not portray America in a positive light – U.S. imperialism, propaganda, and isolationism.  Board members have until May to come up with a final decision.
