How to choose computer chair?

On an average, people who primarily have to work on computers, spend their 40 hours every week sitting on a chair. So if a chair isn’t comfortable, it affects both, the user’s health as well as his/her productivity. A bad chair with poor support can cause severe injuries to spinal cord, and therefore, it becomes important to invest in a good computer chair.

While choosing a computer chair, don’t just treat it as an object that will match up with your office d├ęcor, rather, keep comfort at the top most priority and consider the following ergonomics or design features-

Adjustable seat height- A good computer chair should come with an adjustment lever so that people can adjust the seat height as and when they find suitable. The best-suggested seat height is one when you are able to have your feet flat on the floor and lay your arms in line with desk.

Enough width and depth- You should feel comfortable on the chair even after you’ve sat on it for a significant time. It should have enough seating surface area to accommodate any user comfortably. Also, the seat shouldn’t be too small that it could just support you till mid-thighs, nor should it be too big that you can’t even land your back on the backrest.

Seat material- Padded seats extend the period of comfortable time that you can spend on your computer chair. Leather should usually be avoided, and more breathable fabrics should be preferred. Also, there must be enough cushion so that the person sitting on it doesn’t feel the chair’s base.

Lumbar Support- The ergonomic chair should provide you with ample support for your lower back. The lumbar spine in our body is curved inward, and when people sit without support for this curve for long durations, it can actually flatten the otherwise inward curve. Lumbar adjustment feature is something that you must not miss in order to avoid strains in the lower spine.

Backrest- The backrest should have enough width to support your back. The standard size for it is 12 to 19 inches. You can go for either of the backrest type chairs, one where seat is separated from backrest, and the other where seat and backrest come together as one piece. If it’s the former, make sure its angle and height are adjustable. In case of the latter, check whether your backrest adjusts in different angles. Locking mechanism for the backrest is an absolute must-have to prevent the user from falling backwards once he has reckoned on a particular angle.

Armrests- Armrests should be adjustable since the adjustability lets your arms relax at the right height. If armrests prove a hindrance to your movement coupled with your work requirements then it is good to avoid them. Good armrests should allow user’s arms and shoulders to be in the relaxed state, and should lightly support the elbows & lower arms as well.

Swivel- A swiveling base makes moving around a lot easier. Swivel lets you access different areas of desk easily, without straining yourself.

Now that you know what all to look for while selecting a chair, you are ready to buy one to keep yourself happy, healthy and productive.
