NIEER Report: The State of Preschool 2008The National Institute of Early Education Research released their eighth annual State of Preschool Report, detailing the ups and downs of preschool education in light of the current economic downturn.

David Barnett, director for the institute, spoke with KUHF Monday about what the report findings mean for Texas.

“Texas meets only four of our ten benchmarks for quality standards,” Barnett said. “[It’s] the only state in the country that doesn’t limit class size and teacher to child ratio. That needs to change and there are people who are prepared to change it, but it’s a tough decision.”

Texas Legislature is considering two preschool funding proposals; one provides an increase to early education funding while the other calls for massive cuts.
